What a Medieval Mystic Can Teach Us About Wellness

Hildegard von Bingen was an visionary artist, herbalist, healer, writer, philosopher, poet, and composer born at the end of the 12th Century. She became highly respected and well-known within her lifetime as a healer who used music and plants as medicine.

Like Hildegard von Bingen, I believe herbs (and music) can soothe and heal the body, mind, and spirit. Herbs may or may not cure an ailment, but they can be a balm to what ails you, just as therapeutic music plays a part in a healing process.

A note on tonic: I brew a tonic tea of nettles, peppermint, and oatstraw. When the world feels sour, or my life goes sideways, or I want to feel cozy, or I’ve just returned home from a journey, I make this tea. It helps my children settle in for the night. Nettles for an antihistamine (to cure colds and allergies), oatstraw for good blood, and peppermint for the refreshing taste.

In music, tonic is the home base, the one, the Do of the musical scale. Tonic is the return to home after sound exploration, after a musical thought or phrase, the root of a chord, or a conclusive end to the song. Tonic is the song’s key at its most basic essence.

In times of Victorian home remedies and carpetbaggers, a tonic was a “cure all.” These days, YouTube commercials can feature similar characters offering too-good-to-be-true gimmicks. Tonics can be a panacea of drinks: mushroom coffee, non-alcoholic elixers to substitute for booze, restorative hair liquids, or basic apple cider vinegar drinks that promise balance and well-being if taken daily. Are these tonics giving you the truth? I suggest that what works for some, may not work for another.

What a tonic truly is, is the basis of something at its essence. For my body and personal taste, I have chosen three herbs to be my tonic. You will likely resonate with other herbs. However, some plants (like nettle) are naturally good at a broad variety of concerns and are easy to consume without being unpleasing. The same is true for music: some songs, intervals, harmonies, and scales are more naturally pleasing than others.

A healing balm depends upon the taste of the individual. Musically, sound healers would call this is resonant tone. What tone makes your body sing, may sound dissonant or flat to another. I think Hildegard would have wanted us to find our own personal tonic, whether herbal or musical. Knowing what makes your soul sing is a part of your own personal life journey.

On Singing (to Children) at Home

My grandmother (my father’s mother) loved to sing while she cooked. Folk songs, church songs, musical theater numbers, whatever popular songs were on the radio at the time – that’s what she sang throughout the day as she did her daily housework. Because it was the 1980’s, I’d hear Linda Ronstadt and Barbara Streisand, Dolly & Kenny mixed in with church hymns. My favorite time of year was Christmas. My aunt played at the piano (and later me), while Gramma, my other aunts, my dad, uncle, and cousins sang in four-part harmony. It felt casual in her house, yet magical to think that our own voices together could make such wonderous music together.

Simple pleasures: campfire songs. There was Jim Croce, Bob Dylan, my dad and his cousins bellowing out “Mr. Bojangles” after a couple of beers. Gramma liked the folk tunes: Red River Valley, Shenendoah, Edelweiss.  She’d sing silly songs too, songs I’d only heard in Betty Boop cartoons, old-fashioned, from a time two generations before me. She’d sing “shoe fly pie and apple pan dowdie makes your eyes light up and your tummy say howdee.” These lyrics were famously amusing to my siblings and me. This one she’d sing while mixing up dough and peeling apple skins. Later, while we at it, ice cream dripping down our chins.

After my grandmother died, I asked my dad what songs she had sung to him as a little boy. He remembered “Nature Boy,” the old Nat King Cole song.

Today, I listened to a podcast from Jeralyn Glass about the healing effects of humming. Even without knowing words or melody to a song, the sound of a simple hum tells the body to create more oxygen and less cortisol (the stress hormone). After a headache, I hum various pitches to make the place in my forehead that hurts, vibrate some. This is, I know from my studies as a Certified Clinical Musician, a type of entrainment. One of the most fascinating stories of entrainment is that of Dutch scientist Christiian Huygens in 1665. His is a famous of example of how two clock pendulums swinging in different began to match in rhythm. In the case of this century’s old science experiment, two inanimate objects have proven that they can synch up in rhythmic time. In my case, I apply my humming voice like salve to sooth the physical pain.

I hum after the most painful part of my headache has subsided. I move my hum up and down in  pitch and volume until it finds a match on the left side of my head. In that place, the hum replaces the witless state of my mind with a gentle touch.

Lately, I have gotten into the habit of playing the radio a lot in the kitchen while I cook and my son plays other side of the room. We keep one another company with the radio songs of my choice (new harp tracks, jazz, classical, the local independent station that plays roots, rock & soul) or his requests – soundtracks to Studio Ghibli or Star Wars movies. I haven’t been singing as much.

After my headache and humming episode, I feel inspired to sing. When my son gets home from school I hum “Nature Boy.” Then, I lazily find the words. Maybe I can remember them? Knowing the words doesn’t really seem to matter while humming. Nature Boy is a short song with a melancholy feel.

My son asks, “What song is that?”  

I tell him it’s a song whose notes sound sad, but the words are about a magical boy. The lyrics have a beautiful message about life. The word for that is bittersweet. Bitter for the way the song sounds, but sweet because of the message in the words: “the greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love, and be loved in return.”

Harp Escape vol. 9 (The Dorian Suite)

The Dorian Suite is a song I wrote in honor of my young son. Born in 2017, he was just a toddler when the Pandemic hit, and I wrote this song. At the time I was an artist-in-residence at Nalanda West in Seattle, a Buddhist retreat center. There, I spent hours in quietude composing, meditating, and writing in my journal. (Months before wrote a poem inspired by my new baby, later published in Literary Mama.)

When the world was experiencing early signs of the virus, before lockdown, I was at the Nalanda West a couple days a week. It was a place for me to find peace with the unknown. Any parent with young children can tell you, finding time to oneself is a precious commodity. There are many shifts throughout the day, hour by hour, minute by minute. Music and writing have always been a tool for me to get to a happy place and connect with myself and my place in the world. Through searching, through writing music and words, I was able to find an expression for the time and space of 2020, personally and globally. That is a lot of what this song is about.

This piece has several shifts: from Dorian mode to a relative minor (B minor). The meter, or rhythm, changes back and forth from 4/4 to 3/4 time. This is a musical metaphor for how I felt pulled to and fro, as mom, as musician, as person comfortable in the world, as a person uncomfortable in the world.

Top 10 Sounds to Heal Your Life

Music can be a tool to aid in healing and relaxation. Relaxing sounds encourage us to deepen our breathing, which in turn can encourage many positive side effects like deepened sleep, decreased anxiety, lower heart rate, and decreased stress. Playing harp music is something I do often as a healing modality for bedside therapy, funerals, rites of passage, and for my children when they are ill or need help falling asleep.

Below are ten ways to use sound and music to improve and heal your life. All of these suggestions include awareness of breath and augmenting of breath. So much of our own wellness is linked to breath.

How to Play Songs of Hildegard von Bingen

Recently I taught a an online workshop with Atrium Health Foundation called “Improvising with Hildegard von Bingen.” The music is in conjunction with my forthcoming book by Mel Bay Publications, “Songs of Hildegard von Bingen for Harp.” Atrium Health host Kathleen Blackwell-Plank has been curating a valuable workshop series for therapeutic musicians for the past few years. I was asked to teach the class rather last minute as a substitute and was so glad to have participated. After a show of hands, I realized that even in the musical community only half of people know who Hildegard von Bingen is.

So… Who was Hildegard von Bingen?

Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) was born in Germany during the Middle Ages, at a time when education and literacy were controlled by the Catholic Church. The tenth child in her family, Hildegard was “given” as a tithing to the church, not an uncommon practice of the time.  When she was 14, she was sent to live a life of religious devotion in Disibodenberg. At the convent, she prayed, wrote, and only had access to the outside world through the view of a single window.

When her main caretaker, Jutta, died in 1136, Hildegard was appointed prioress of the abbey. It was during that time that she began writing music. Despite her claim of lacking formal training in either the Latin language or music, Hildegard produced songs that were equal to those written by the most admired men of the Middle Ages. A woman of letters, she often communicated directly with clergy of the church, including Pope Eugene III, who encouraged her to continue writing music and poetry. She went on to write several books about religion, art, politics, philosophy, science, medicine, and herbs.

Hildegard had visions that she called “reflections of the living light,” and she painted what she saw. She suffered from headaches and some scholars of her writing suspect that she may have She had many visitors at the abbey who claimed that she was able to heal them though touch and with her knowledge of herbal medicine. In time, she had so many visitors, that a larger venue was needed. The church relocated her to an abbey of her own, in Bingen, where she was able to attend to more people. She died there at the age of 81.

Monophonic (single line melody), choral, sung in Latin, modal (most often in Dorian, Phrygian, and Mixolydian modes), natural minor keys, Gregorian Chant

How does this music translate to the harp?

Beautifully! Hildegard’s music is often in modes and have minimal lever changes.

Weather Report on Orange on the Radio

I had the wonderful opportunity to read my poem, Weather Report on Orange, on the radio thanks to Vashon Island Poet Laureate Margaret Roncone. “Return to Light” features 10 island poets and will be broadcast at 12 o’clock noon on the Winter Solstice, Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023. You Need Harp Music for Rituals and Rites of Passage

We come to rituals to commemorate a moment in time, an event, or a loved one: a birth, love, a death. Often music plays a part in these rituals. Harp music in particular can be a meaningful addition to any ceremony. My work playing music for several decades at rites of passage and ceremonies of all sorts has given me a unique perspective on the process of ritual.

I have played harp since 1990, and I have been studying music earlier than that. As a young Catholic child, I was introduced to many ceremonies of the church – for holidays, feast days, seasons of the year, and of course, various passages of human life: birth, graduation, marriage, anniversary, and death. Since then, I would guess I’ve played music for nearly 600 weddings, and 500 funerals, memorials, and vigils.

Winter Solstice Ritual

Often, when music is a part of a reverent ceremony, it is a service, rather than entertainment. For instance, when I worked for Providence Hospice as a complementary therapist, I played harp for clients whose life might be on the threshold of death at any minute. There are certain styles and sounds that are most effective at this time. Sometimes my client didn’t have any loved ones present, so the gift of music meant all the more to them.

Considering Calming Harp for Funeral Music

Harp is an instrument synonymous with peace and love. Harp also soothes and heals, alleviating emotional grief, physical distress, anxiety, and exhaustion. As a harpist, I enjoy offering funeral music for clients who have lost a loved one. I’ve studied the musical styles and songs that work well in the situation of death, such as ambient music. I can also play music that fits your family’s individual requests.

I have written compositions for the intention of creating peace of mind and healing. This relaxing style of music, by nature, helps to alleviate grief, stress, and other emotions associated with coping with death. Also, I have arranged a collection of Hildegard von Bingen’s songs, who was a Medieval plant medicine healer, spiritual leader, artist, musician, and composer.

I am always glad to accommodate requests of the family as best as I can within the time frame of the event.  For a traditional church memorial, I may be asked to play hymns, like “Into the Garden,” or “Amazing Grace,” as well as accompany a vocalist. For a modern request, I have played songs by Sting and Michael Jackson at a memorial, because those songs were favorites of the deceased. Cultural folk songs might also be another request if the person was an immigrant or felt close to their ethnic heritage.

Sometimes though, it is best to play non-familiar songs for the sake of a family’s grief, particularly if the cause of death was tragic. In this case, songs that serve more as background music are better, because they conjure up less of an emotional reaction at a time that might already be too difficult for loved ones to bear. When this is the situation, I play ambient non-familiar music to be as soothing as possible, as I would in a hospital or hospice – a skill I learned as Certified Therapeutic Musician.

Gravesite burials are something I enjoy playing harp for when I am able to, and when weather allows. I have a very small harp that I use in these moments, but I can also bring my 34 string folk harp in the summer months. For many funerals, I have played harp at both the indoor memorial, and graveside location back-to-back on the same day, a scenario that works well at a traditional funeral home with attached cemetery.

Plenty of people don’t want religious music at a funeral, and I have repertoire for them too. I am quite comfortable with traditional and non-traditional situations around death. I know how to seamlessly weave songs together if there is to be an event with little to no speaking.

I have been studying funeral music since 1995 when I played church organ at the funeral of a friend’s father, and I have been studying music much longer. Since 2012 I have studied and worked as a therapeutic musician, so that I can provide music as an in-person healing modality.

Harp Escape vol. 8 (City of Stars)

The harp is a beautiful instrument. The harp is also an impractical instrument. I should know. I had to buy a smaller harp when I had my second child, just so I could fit my whole family in the car with my instrument at the same time! Of course I think it is worth it. The harp is ancient, dreamy, and relaxing. It calls to many musicians and non-musicians. For over thirty years I have been gravitated to it’s magical call.

For these overly-practical times, these ship-sinking-times, I want to watch escapist movies like La La Land. When the pandemic hit, and I was making Harp Escape videos a little more frequently, I wanted to pay tribute to the wonderful soundtrack Justin Hurwitz created for this romantic story that payed homage to the Golden Age of film.

Because we are living in such an unusual time, stress levels can be high. It is difficult to plan, and life can be downright hopeless feeling some days.
